Magpies must first secure their top-flight status for the next campaign though.
Newcastle United are eyeing up a surprise move for Liverpool midfield player Jay Spearing for next season, according to reports in The Guardian.
The Englishman, who operates as a holding midfield player, is currently out on a season-long loan with high-flying Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers after being made surplus to requirements at Anfield by new Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers last summer.
However, once the 24-year-old’s loan at the Reebok comes to an end next month, Spearing is due back on Merseyside where he is expected to sit down with Rodgers and discuss what plans the Northern Irishman has for him, if any, for next season.
The tough-tackling central midfield player has been a revelation for Bolton so far in this campaign, recently winning the fans’ Player of the Year award after featuring in 37 league games for the club as they have challenged for a play-off spot, scoring two goals in the process.
And, with only two years left on his current deal at Anfield, Newcastle will be hoping to sign Spearing on the cheap this summer.
