Magpies are desperate to add more firepower to their attack next season.
Newcastle United are to step up their attempts to sign unsettled Aston Villa front man Darren Bent this summer, according to reports in the Daily Mirror.
The some-time England international has been at Villa Park now for just the past two-and-a-half seasons, having originally arrived in the Midlands from Sunderland in Jan 2011 for a fee that could rise to as much as £24 million depending upon add ons.
However, after a fine start to his career at Villa, the 29-year-old lost both his place up front and the captain’s armband last season under new Villa head coach Paul Lambert, so much so that the forward featured in just 23 matches in all competitions, scoring only the six goals along the way.
And now Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is hoping to take advantage of the player’s unhappiness at Villa by making a move for Bent, who still has two years left to run on his deal in the Midlands, although the Magpies will need to meet Villa’s £10m asking price before any transfer can take place.
