Surprise came with Jags taking Bortles at No.3…
The first round of the NFL Draft 2014 is complete, and amongst the biggest surprises was the Jacksonville Jaguars opting for quarterback Blake Bortles with their third overall pick.
It came as no real shock that defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was selected by the Houston Texans, with the former South Carolina star confident prior to proceedings starting that the franchise wouldn’t pass up on him.
However, much of the talk was regarding the quarterbacks in this class, and with Johnny Manziel dominating the headlines over the past few weeks, the former Texas A&M signal-caller perhaps had to wait longer than expected.
After waiting nearly three hours, Manziel was finally selected with the 22nd overall pick by the Cleveland Browns who insisted that they believe the hype surrounding their new quarterback will not be a problem when the season starts.
“The shot in the arm that I would rather give this organization is in the fall,” Browns coach Mike Pettine said Thursday night. “We talked about that before. Talk is cheap. Hype is exactly that.”
Meanwhile, the Jaguars had been linked with various stars but eventually opted for quarterback Bortles, while Sammy Watkins will hope to shine for the Buffalo Bills after they traded up five spots to take the wide receiver with the No.4 overall pick.
