Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner from Florida State University, and Mariota, the 2014 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Oregon, are both training with Ryan Flaherty of the Prolific Athletes training company in southern California and are reportedly working hard to get to the ideal NFL weight.
In an interview with Yahoo! Sports, Flaherty said both of the Heisman Trophy-winning athletes are eager to work with each other.
“You talk to them and they’re like, ‘No, I want to work with him,'” Flaherty said, “”That’s the best part. They’re both wanting to be the guy and they’ll fight for it, but they’re pushing each other.”
Both QBs are expected to be drafted very early in the draft, with the consensus being that Winston will be drafted No. 1 overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Mariota being taken by either the Tennessee Titans, St. Louis Rams, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets or Philadelphia Eagles somewhere in the top ten.
Flaherty added that Mariota has gained ten good pounds since Oregon’s National Championship loss to Ohio State and should weigh in at around 225 lbs come the Combine. Winston, who had drawn criticism lately for being above playing weight, has also slimmed down to 230 lbs.
The scouting combine will be held from February 17 until February 23, and will be one of the key sites for NFL scouts and team executives to get a good look at the two best QB prospects as they show off their athleticism in the national spotlight.
