Entering the final year of his rookie contract with the team, Wilkerson has been frustrated by the lack of progress in a contract extension with the team that drafted him No. 30 overall in the 2011 NFL draft. Since joining the Jets, Wilkerson has recorded 24.5 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, 14 passes defended and over 230 tackles in four seasons. Wilkerson was named the Jets team MVP in 2013 after recording a career-high 10.5 sacks and earning Second-Team All-Pro honors. Though he has yet to make the Pro Bowl, he has been listed on the NFL Network Top 100 Players list two years in a row. Metro New York reporter Kristia Dyer reported that Wilkerson said he is willing to play on the final year of his contract if necessary.
