Geno Smith’s turnaround in 2013 began with a win over the Raiders in the last month.
Raiders to start Derek Carr
Jets name Geno Smith starter
Rex Ryan – The Jets gave Rex Ryan a contract extension after a fairly successful 2013 season
Location: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ
Head-to-Head record: Raiders lead 21-16-2 (tied in playoffs, 2-2)
Last Meeting: December 8, 2013 – Jets won 37-27
The New York Jets host the Oakland Raiders in Week 1 with plenty of storylines to talk about:
The Raiders are starting rookie QB Derek Carr over veteran Matt Schaub after Carr’s stellar preseason performances. They also added former Jets RT Austin Howard and several over-the-hill players such as Maurice Jones-Drew and Justin Tuck to lead the offense and defense respectively.
The Jets are going to let Geno Smith take the reins at QB, but still have not officially named him their season starter. In addition, the Jets will start Safety Antonio Allen at CB while starter Dee Milliner recovers from an injury – which means first-round draft pick Calvin Pryor will start in his place at Safety.
Both of the young QBs in this game – Carr and Smith – will have a lot to prove in this game. Smith will have to demonstrate his growth from last season and avoid turnovers while Carr will have to prove he can play in an NFL system after speculation that he still is not ready.
Prediction: Raiders – This game has let-down written all over it for the Jets. Derek Carr has been phenomenal in the preseason and will look to exploit the weakened secondary of the Jets that features three brand new starters at DB.
