The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Carolina Panthers 45-21 on Monday Night Football in Week 10 of the NFL season.
With QB Mark Sanchez leading the Eagles in place of injured QB Nick Foles, he led the offense on five successful scoring drives to record his first NFL win since 2012. After scoring the first 10 points of the game off Panther turnovers, the Panthers came back with a TD of their own to cut the Eagles lead to 10-7. But then the team went on a run that included TDs by the special teams, defense and the offense to essentially wrap up the game before halftime. RB-PR Darren Sproles returned a punt 65 yards for a TD, then Mark Sanchez found rookie WR Jordan Matthews for a 13-yard TD, and towards the end of the half Eagles defender Bradley Fletcher intercepted Panthers QB Cam Newton and took it back 34 yards for a TD. Going into the half the score was 31-7 Eagles.
Two more Eagles TDs in the second half made it impossible for the Panthers to come back. Despite two TDs from Cam Newton to rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin, it wasn’t enough for the Panthers to come back.
As good as Sanchez played with 332 passing yards and two TDs, the real story of the game was the defense. The Eagles defense forced 5 Panthers turnovers – 3 INTs and a fumble from both RB DeAngelo Williams and Cam Newton – and sacked Newton an astounding nine times.
With the win the Eagles move to 7-2 on the season and 1st place in the NFC East. The Eagles next game will be against the Green Bay Packers.
With the loss the Panthers move to 3-6-1 and are still in 2nd place in the NFC South, but are less than two games behind the New Orleans Saints for the division lead. The Panthers play the Atlanta Falcons next week.
