The Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Tennessee Titans 27-24 on Monday Night Football thanks to a great rushing performance from Steelers RB Le’Veon Bell.
On the first drive of the game the Steelers went down the field and scored a FG. On the ensuing Titans possession, rookie QB Zach Mettenberger threw a pick-6 to DB William Gay to give the Steelers a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. But after getting the ball back on the next drive, the Titans marched down the field and scored on a Bishop Sankey 9-yard TD run. Another Steelers FG ended the first quarter, but then the Titans stormed back into the game. In the second quarter the Titans scored an early FG to cut the deficit to 3. Then the Titans took the lead with 0:32 remaining in the half with an 80-yard TD bomb from Mettenberger to WR Nate Washington to make the score 17-13.
In the second half, the Titans extended their lead to 24-13 after another TD from Mettenberger, this time to receiver Chase Coffman. But Le’Veon Bell took over the game for the Steelers in the 4th quarter, scoring a TD early in the quarter to cut the lead to 24-20 and later setting up QB Ben Roethlisberger TD pass to WR Antonio Brown to give them the 27-24 lead. Bell finished the game with 204 rushing yards on 33 carries – an incredible 6.2 yards/carry average.
With the win the Steelers’ record is now 7-4 and move into 2nd place in the AFC North but sixth place in the AFC overall – if the season ended today they would be in the playoffs. Pittsburgh’s have a bye next week and their next game will be against the New Orleans Saints at home.
With the loss the Titans fall to 2-8 on the season, guaranteeing their 3rd consecutive year without a winning season. Tennessee’s next game will be on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 12.
