The San Diego Chargers take on the New England Patriots in Week 14 of the NFL season with important playoff scenarios at stake.
After starting the season 5-1 with their most notable victory coming against the defending Superbowl Champion Seattle Seahawks, the Chargers fell off the map with three straight losses – including a 37-0 shutout loss to the Dolphins before their Week 10 bye. Since then however, the Chargers have moved into the No. 5 playoff seed with three straight wins – albeit close ones – giving them an 8-4 record heading into the game. QB Philip Rivers has been leading the team, putting up some of his best numbers with a 69.1% completion rate. Rivers is in the same class as many elite QBs and is one of the few that has typically given the Patriots fits.
The Patriots are doing just fine despite their recent loss to the Green Bay Packers. QB Tom Brady and TE Rob Gronkowski as well as WR Tim Wright have been on a tear and the defense is playing great. The RB by committee approach has been extremely effective with RBs Jonas Gray and LeGarrette Blount switching off 100+ yard games. At 9-3 the Patriots only need to win out in order to clinch the No. 1 overall seed in the conference, but they have had their struggles on the road, so that may play a factor.
Prediction: Patriots – These are the kind of trap games that Tom Brady never loses. Ever. The Patriots know what is at stake and won’t let an above-average team like the Chargers take them down. It takes a special kind of team to pull a fast one against the Patriots, and the Chargers just aren’t that special.
