The Carolina Panthers held on for a 19-17 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as they played without starting quarterback Cam Newton, who had two transverse fractures in his back due to a car crash.
The Buccaneers scored a touchdown with about three minutes remaining, but quarterback Josh McCown threw a game-ending interception on the final drive to end the game.
Panthers quarterback Derek Anderson came through when needed as he threw for 277 yards and a touchdown on 25-of-40 passing, and running back Jonathan Stewart had another solid game as he ran for 73 yards on 22 carries.
Tight end Greg Olsen was Anderson’s favorite weapon as he caught 10 passes for 110 yards, and wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin added eight catches for 104 yards.
For the Buccaneers, running back Doug Martin continued to distance himself from Charles Sims as the feature back by running for 96 yards on 14 carries.
McCown was held to 154 passing yards with one touchdown and an interception. Wide receiver Mike Evans only had two catches for 13 yards, but he caught his 11th touchdown pass of the season.
