Rex Ryan is on his way out, and he’s taking the Jets chances of a good future with him. By virtue of his team winning a meaningless game against a now-2-12 Tennessee Titans team – their first road win of the season – the Jets move to 3-11 on the season. If the season ended today the Jets would have the No. 6 overall pick – a loss would have given them the No. 2 pick. At No. 6 the Jets are in no position to draft either QB Marcus Mariota or QB Jameis Winston, both seen as potential franchise QBs for a franchise that hasn’t had consistent success at the QB position since Joe Namath.
The difference between the No. 2 pick and the No. 6 pick cannot be overstated. That’s the difference between a franchise QB and a minimum-value skill position. Jets coaches and players will never tank, nonetheless, the Jets may have cost themselves another year in QB hell by winning that meaningless game.
Here are the five biggest losers from Week 15 of the NFL season:
Green Bay Packers – That loss not only took them out of the running for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, it also gave the NFC North lead to the Detroit Lions, making it highly possible that the Packers won’t go far if they head in on the road.
San Francisco 49ers – The 49ers were robbed on a terrible roughing the passer call, nonetheless they are out of the playoffs for a variety of reasons, and could likely be in rebuilding mode next season if Jim Harbaugh leaves town.
Philadelphia Eagles – The Eagles need to wash their hands of Sanchez as a starter before he puts together a good performance and tricks fans into thinking he is worth investing time and money in. The Eagles have too much talent to waste it on him – and now no longer control their playoff destiny because of his poor play.
Cleveland Browns – Johnny Manziel joined some terrible company by getting shut out in his NFL debut. The Browns have no control of their playoff hopes and will likely be forced to start a new QB competition next year once Brian Hoyer gets the boot.
New York Jets – It doesn’t matter that they lost a chance at drafting Mariota or Winston as much as they lost a chance to rid themselves of GM John Idzik. If Idzik does not get fired at the end of this season they will have given up Rex Ryan and subjected their fans to all of this pain for nothing.
