The Gunners are beginning to look stranded in the transfer market.
There are more woes for Arsenal as transfer target Luiz Gustavo has joined Wolfsburg from Bayern Munich rather than heading to England.
The 26-year-old had been strongly linked with the Gunners and even openly admitted that a switch to the Emirates Stadium would interest the Brazilian.
However, with the north London club unwilling to meet Bayern’s €17m valuation of the Brazil international. Arsene Wenger’s men have now missed out on another target.
So far this summer Gonzalo Higuain, Bernard and now Gustavo have all bypassed the Emirates in favour of different clubs and Wenger’s long-running pursuit of Liverpool’s Luis Suarez is beginning to look in vain.
The Brazilian meanwhile was looking for a move away from the Allianz Arena after the midfielder’s place in the side became unlikely, due to the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona.
With Arsenal needing better cover in defensive midfield Gustavo looked like the ideal acquisition, but fans at the Emirates will now have to watch another player on the wish list move somewhere else.
With a long-term injury for vice-captain Mikel Arteta, someone of the South American’s quality would have been the ideal replacement, but now it seems Wenger will have to rely on the talented, but not always fit, Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere.
The lack of transfer activity in the red half of north London is beginning to verge on farcical, as supporters become increasingly frustrated that France under-20 striker Yaya Sanogo is the only new face at the club.
