Hayne shocked the world of rugby league last November after announcing he was quitting the NRL to pursue his lifelong dream of playing in the NFL.
The 27-year-old’s dream is now one step closer after signing a futures contract ahead of the new season, which begins in September.
Hayne is guaranteed US$100,000 and a spot on the roster for 15-20 weeks.
It was widely reported that Hayne was close to securing a deal with the Detroit Lions, however it is believed he preferred the lifestyle San Francisco had to offer.
“I spoke to (49ers general manager) Trent Baalke and we did the handshake over the phone,” Hayne is quoted as saying by AAP.
“It feels surreal to me, it’s a small step in the right direction. The hard stuff starts now.”
“A lot of boys are interested, but they don’t have the confidence and faith that I have,” Hayne added.
“You’ve got to go all in, I’ve got no back-up plan. I’m putting all my chips on the table, whatever happens, happens.”
Hayne will now join the 49ers practice squad and a bid to make the cut for the 53-man squad in August.
