Black Cats face a tough run-in to the season.
Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has lamented two big injuries to Steven Fletcher and Lee Cattermole as the Black Cats battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
In-form Scotland international front man Fletcher picked up a serious looking ankle injury playing against Wales in a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park last Friday, and will now definitely be missing from Saturday’s massive top-flight encounter against runaway Premier League leaders Manchester United at the Stadium of Light.
However, the Northern Irishman remained upbeat ahead of the visit of the Red Devils, saying that the two injuries have simply presented other squad players with a great opportunity to come into the team and leave a mark between now and the end of the campaign.
And Sunderland are going to need all the help that they can get between now and May, with a tough run of fixtures to come against primarily sides from the top six.
