The Young Tigers have recently ended a four-month tour of Slovakia.
Harimau Mudu ‘A’ are aiming to win a gold medal at the SEA Games, says head coach Ong Kim Swee.
The Young Tigers have recently returned to Malaysia for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations following a four-month tour of Slovakia, where they chalked up wins against Slavia Prague, SC Wiener Neustadt and FK Pohrone.
However, they ended the trip with a 5-1 defeat to Zlate Moravce, adding to a poor run of three wins and four draws in the last 24 games, and Ong believes their performance at the SEA Games will shape whether the excursion was a success.
“The exposure that we got in Slovakia was really good, but to determine whether it is a fruitful trip or not, we have to wait until the end of SEA Games,” Goal.com report him as saying to Utusan.
“If we retain our gold medal, that means it was a success and if we did not qualify for at least the semi-finals, then it was all just a waste of time.”
Before competing in Burma-hosted tournament, which begins in December, Malaysia’s under-23 squad will take part in the Merdeka Cup next month and Ong says it will form part of their preparation.
“I believe that we are ready for the Merdeka Cup when my players return this August 12th and I hope some of our injured players can return and play in that tournament,” he added.
