Soon-to-be free agent Umenyiora choosing next team carefully.
New York Giants star Osi Umenyiora is set to enter free agency for the first time in his NFL career, and despite being a little nervous, the player has high aspirations for next season.
A defensive end for the Giants for the past 10 years, Umenyiora has 75 career sacks, has been one of the best speed rushers in the game over the past decade, setting an NFL record in 2010 after forcing 10 fumbles.
The 31-year-old is also a two-time Super Bowl champion and has had two Pro Bowl invites but will potentially be seeking a new team this off-season.
That hasn’t put him off detailing his lofty ambitions for the new season though, speaking to NFL Network’s “NFL Total Access” on Friday night, he discussed his future plans.
“It wouldn’t have to be a play-off team,” he said.
“It could be anybody pretty much anybody who would need me to help them win, and anybody who I think is going to put me in a situation to win Defensive Player of the Year, which is what I’m going to do this year,” he added.
After being asked to repeat his prediction, Umenyiora obliged with a slight grin on his face but certainly feels he can achieve the feat.
The British-born star admitted to being nervous about testing the free agency market for the first time but made it clear he wants to join a team that will give him plenty of playing time and can also pay him handsomely.
He also left the door open for a return with the Giants, stating that New York “is home”.
However, Umenyiora believes it is going to be tough for all parties concerned to come to an agreement to extend his stay in the Big Apple, and therefore will be open to offers outside of the City.
Remember the prediction, Osi Umenyiora says he will be the NFL Defensive player of the Year next season.
Who he will achieve that with remains to be seen.
