United have been heavily linked to the Argentine defender over the past few months and Metro reports he has agreed on a move to Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old still has four years remaining on his current deal with the La Liga side and United will have to dig deep into its coffers to sign the former FC Porto star.
Metro reports Otamendi to be rated at £36.5m, but he could be the man to help fix Louis van Gaal’s issues in central defence after the Dutchman failed to settle on a solid combination this season.
Chelsea has previously been interested in Otamendi, but it now seems the Red Devils are the front-runners to snare the Argentine international.
United are believed to have attempted to sign Otamendi twice previously, but were knocked back on both occasions.
