Manchester United news
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal claims he sold Danny Welbeck to Arsenal for £16m because he didn’t feel the England forward was up to scratch…
The Red Devils offloaded the 23-year-old on transfer deadline day, but many were surprised they allowed him to join a top four rival.
United’s new Dutch boss though has no worries about the sale, reckoning that in Robin van Persie (signed from Arsenal two seasons ago), he has the far superior forward anyway.
“Welbeck was here for three years after his Sunderland loan, and he didn’t have the numbers of Van Persie or Rooney; that’s the standard, so we let him go,” van Gaal said.
Welbeck is expected to make his Arsenal debut at home to Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime, while van Persie now has to compete with the brilliant Radamel Falcao for a starting spot at United.
