Despite multiple reports that the NFL was considering shortening San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith’s suspension for violations of the substance-abuse and personal conduct policies, Smith will remain suspended through this Sunday’s game against the Saints.
Tuesday was reportedly the likeliest day for the NFL to make an announcement so that both the 49ers and Saints could prepare for the game with full knowledge of which players would be available for the contest.
No announcement came from the league on Tuesday, however, and none is likely forthcoming. Ed Werder of ESPN reported Tuesday night that Smith’s suspension won’t be altered and that he’ll miss the game in New Orleans before becoming eligible to return for the team’s Week 11 game against the Giants.
Smith has not played since the 2013 season but has been in the news multiple times for arrests and disturbances, including an airport altercation in which he claimed he was carrying a bomb.
