After winning the toss Pakistan decided to put opponents Sri Lanka into bat in this, the first Test of a three match series between the sub continental rivals.
Clearly captain Misbah-ul-Haq had decided that the dry surface would favour the home side’s bowling attack and the skipper was not wrong as the visitors slumped to 204 all-out.
It could have been a lot worse for the Sri Lankans as well had it not been for a determined 91 from their captain and all-rounder Angelo Mathews.
Things started well as openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Jayan Silva batted to 57 without loss, before Junaid Khan took the first of the fast bowler’s five wickets.
A mini collapse then occurred as Silva fell shortly afterwards as Bilawal Bhatti joined the party and then took two wickets in as many balls.
When Khan dismissed Kumar Sangakkara for 16 the away side were floundering on 82-5.
Khan and the returning Saeed Ajmal then finished off the job, with the standout Mathews the last man to fall after a valiant effort.
In reply the Pakistanis made it to 46-1 at close of play, with Mathews again involved when running out opener Khurram Manzoor.
