Napoli decide not to spend on Liverpool goalie.
Liverpool’s goalkeeper Pepe Reina might be forced to return to the Premier League with Arsenal this season following a fruitful loan spell at Italian club Napoli last term, according to the Daily Star.
The San Paolo Manager Rafa Benitez has hinted that the Spanish international’s wages and Liverpool’s asking price were too expensive for his team.
The former Liverpool boss, who had worked closely with Reina earlier in his career, too, feels that the Spaniard would only be surplus to requirements at the Stadio San Paolo since his side already have 3 other goalies.
Reina might not fancy a return to the Reds though as he fell out with Kop boss Brendan Rodgers last season before seeking a loan spell away. Rodgers was reportedly rubbed the wrong way when the 31-year old wrote an open letter to Liverpool’s fans stating his reasons for exiting the Merseyside club.
The Northern Irishman has since recruited Simon Mignolet from Sunderland, and has now earmarked the Belgian as his first choice in goal at Anfield. Premier League side Arsenal are also said to be interested in acquiring Reina’s services though, and while the former Barcelona man would grab another escape route from Anfield with both hands, one will have to wait and see whether the Reds will sell the experienced Premier League goalie to a rival club.
