Reds are in need of more competition at the back at Anfield next season.
Liverpool’s long-running move for Ajax captain Toby Alderweireld is still very much on the cards this summer, says the Daily Star.
The in-demand Belgium international has been the subject of much talk over the past few months, with the likes of the Merseyside giants and Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen both thought to be keen on landing the 24-year-old when the transfer window had reopened at the start of this month.
However, the German side have now reportedly pulled out of the race to sign the highly rated centre back and with the Eredivisie champions having also now put in place plans to secure a replacement for the defender at the Amsterdam ArenA next season, the path has seemingly been cleared for the Reds to make their move for the player.
Alderweireld has been in Amsterdam throughout his whole career to date, having appeared in 181 matches in all competitions for the Dutch giants since 2008, including 124 contests in the league, and with a contract with Ajax that runs only until next summer, Liverpool are not expecting to pay more than £8 million for the player.
