Scot has words of warning for his key attacker.
Aston Villa head coach Paul Lambert says that he hopes his in-form striker Christian Benteke can repeat his sensational form in front of goal this season in the following campaign, reports the Daily Mail.
The Belgium international, who was nominated for the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year award on Friday, has been a revelation for the struggling Premier League outfit this season.
In fact, without the 22-year-old’s top-flight goals in this campaign, Lambert’s relegation-threatened side would almost certainly have already dropped down to the Championship.
Benteke has netted an eye-catching 15 times so far in only 30 Premier League games for the Midlands giants since arriving at Villa Park from Belgium first division Genk last summer for just £7 million, while the team itself has only managed 36 goals in total all season.
And, Lambert is hoping that if Villa can avoid the drop, then Benteke can carry on his red-hot attacking form next season.
