The #9 Ole Miss Rebels take on the #6 TCU Horned Frogs in the Peach Bowl – the first matchup of top 10 college football teams this bowl season.
The Rebels started the season 7-0 for the first time in school history but were then upset in back-to-back weeks by the LSU Tigers and Auburn Tigers to fall out of College Football Playoff contention. Despite fielding one of the best defenses in college football and being the only team in 2014 to beat Alabama, Ole Miss was unable to make it to the SEC title game, but managed to climb to #9 after beating Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. QB Bo Wallace is one of the most consistent QBs in football, with 61% completion, 22 TDs and over 3,000 yards passing, and distributes the ball rather evenly to a receiving corps four players that have over 500 receiving yards. The key to beating the Rebels will be to keep the ball out of Bo Wallace’s hands with sustained drives.
The Horned Frogs were arguably the biggest snub of the College Football Playoffs, with their lone loss coming to #5 Baylor in a narrow 61-58 loss. Since then, TCU has gone on a 7-game winning streak that includes wins over the likes of #20 West Virginia, #7 Kansas State and Texas. The Horned Frogs have not been held below 30 points all season, have scored over 40 points eight times, over 50 points four times and even set a school record with an eye-popping 82 points against the Texas Tech Red Raiders on October 25th. The key to their success has been QB Trevone Boykin, a former Heisman trophy contender who ended the year with over 3,700 passing yards, 38 total TDs, a 60% completion rate and over 50 rushing yards per game as well as 8 TD runs. The key to beating the Horned Frogs will be to stop Trevone Boykin at all costs and keep him on the ground.
Prediction: TCU Horned Frogs win the Peace Bowl – The Achilles heel of the TCU Horned Frogs is their defense, but unlike many high-scoring teams that have gone toe-to-toe with TCU, Ole Miss lacks that. While Ole Miss may have one of the best defenses in college football, they have never faced an offense nearly as explosive as TCU’s and have not beaten a QB as dynamic as Trevone Boykin when he’s playing at his best.
