The Gunners fell behind to Mark Hughes’ full throttle Stoke City outfit after just fourteen seconds as they struggled to deal with the physicality and intensity of the home side’s approach at the Britannia Stadium.
Mertesacker was not impressed with what he saw during the opening 45 minutes, as he made clear when asked about the game following the final whistle:
“We nearly came back from a shocking first half. We had to show some morale and some respect to our travelling fans.”
