The Philadelphia Eagles experienced a close, heartbreaking loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday as they gave up a 20-17 lead with 1:21 left and failed to regain the lead on their final drive.
The Eagles had decided to kick a field goal in a fourth-and-goal situation with two minutes remaining, and kicker Cody Parkey made a 20-yard field goal to give the Eagles a 20-17 lead. However, they gave up a long touchdown to the Cardinals that would lose them the game.
This left head coach Chip Kelly open to criticism, but he defended his call to take the three points. “I thought our defense to that point was playing really, really well. I had confidence in them. I told them that we were kicking the field goal because I had confidence in them,” Kelly said to the Philadelphia Enquirer.
However, Kelly was burned after showing faith in his defense. Although the Eagles lost the game, it is hard to say whether they would have converted on the fourth down and improved their chances of winning if they went for the touchdown.
