Super-middleweight champion Andre Ward has announced that he has joined music mogul Jay Z’s Roc Nation Sports after parting ways with Goossen Promotions.
Ward has fought just twice in the past three years due to an on-going contractual dispute with his former promotional company, but he signed with Jay Z shortly after working out an agreement to part ways with Goossen.
Details were not revealed regarding the terms of his split with Goossen, but it is undoubtedly an exciting new beginning for both the fighter and the company as Ward will instantly become the face of boxing for Roc Nation Sports.
Ward (27-0, 14 KOs) is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world but his inactivity has raised questions over his ability to dominate a highly-talented division.
Nevertheless, after years of court battles, falling-outs and general unhappiness, he will relish the new opportunity that he now has in front of him and he has been welcomed in by David Itskowitch, chief operating officer of Roc Nation Sports.
“We have signed Andre Ward and it’s something we’re very excited about,” David Itskowitch, chief operating officer of Roc Nation Sports’ boxing division, told ESPN.com.
“It’s just the beginning for us but it’s a game changer. He’s one of the best fighters in the world. Everything is coming together for us. On the same day we are having our first event, at Madison Square Garden, we are announcing our first really huge signing.”
