The New Orleans Saints are expected to keep Pierre Thomas as the third running back on their roster, but he will likely continue to be a key pass catcher.
The New Orleans Saints lost running back Darren Sproles to the Philadelphia Eagles, but they still have a talented trio at the position.
Mark Ingram, Khiry Robinson and Pierre Thomas are all competing for carries in the Saints’ backfield.
Thomas is expected to be the third running back on the Saints’ depth chart according to the Times-Picayune. However, he is also expected to resume his role as a pass catcher in the backfield like he did last year when filling in for the injured Sproles.
Ingram is on track to become the starter after rushing for 83 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries. Robinson is also being seen as a breakout candidate in 2014, and he showed plenty of promise by rushing for 23 yards and a touchdown on five carries.
Thomas being considered a third running back demonstrates how deep the Saints’ backfield is, and they should help the offense flourish once again.
