Keisel is well-known throughout the NFL for his mountain man beard, but he was a popular locker room figure for the Steelers and a reliable contributor on the field.
He came up with 30 sacks in his career while making the Pro Bowl in 2010, but his 2014 season was cut short by a season-ending torn triceps injury.
Safety Troy Polamalu is also expected to be released after a long and successful career with the Steelers, who won two Super Bowl championships with him and Keisel on the team.
Sports Illustrated announced the release of the longtime Steeler on Twitter.
