Pochettino to use his Southampton connection to good effect.
Tottenham Hotspur are hoping to beat rivals Liverpool to the signature of Southampton central defender Dejan Lovren by hijacking the Reds’ deal for the Croat, reports the Mirror.
Lovren, 24, wants to play in the Champions League though, which could get the defender to drop the prospect of reuniting with his former manager Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane.
Pochettino is plotting major changes to the North London club’s squad, and wants the assured presence of Lovren at the heart of his defence – particularly since the futures of Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and Jan Vertonghen remain uncertain.
Liverpool meanwhile, are ready to match the Saints’ £15 million asking price for the central defender, and are also hoping to strike while the iron is hot after having signed the South coast club’s striker Rickie Lambert recently.
Southampton too will not allow an easy transfer out for Lovren, despite the former Lyon man submitting a transfer request, as the Saints look to gain the maximum value for their star players, and also do not want too many big players to leave the club at the same time.
