Arsenal play well to beat Fenerbahce 5-0 on aggregate – but the same old questions dominate the post-match press conference…
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that his Germany forward Lukas Podolski will be out for three weeks, and admitted interest in Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata, he told ITV Football.
The Gunners cruised to a 5-0 aggregate win over Turkish side Fenerbahce in Tuesday evening’s Champions League qualifying tie, winning 2-0 at the Emirates thanks to a brace from Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey.
Instead of being congratulated on his side’s accomplished performance, the French boss once again had to answer questions about potential transfers.
“We are on the market,” said the veteran manager.
“I don’t know what to say anymore,” Wenger added, after being bombarded with questions all summer due to his side missing out on multiple targets like Luis Suarez, Gonzalo Higuain and Luiz Gustavo.
A striker could now be even more of a priority, as Podolski limped off injured.
“Podolski is definitely out for 21 days (with a hamstring injury),” said the Gunners boss.
Interestingly, he also refused to rule out a move for Chelsea playmaker Juan Mata, who is bizarrely surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
“I have heard like you that Juan Mata may be on the market. I like him… there is a reluctance in England to sell to each other.”
The irony of the claim that English clubs won’t sell to each other will not be lost on many Arsenal fans – who have witnessed their side sell star players Robin Van Persie, Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor to Premier League rivals in recent seasons.
