With news breaking of Uefa’s intent to create two all-star teams of players made from Serie A, La Liga, the Portuguese Primera Liga and France’s Ligue 1, we have decided to put together a rip-roaring starting XI that could give those pesky northern Europeans a run for their money.

So without any further ado, we present to you the Fanatix Select southern European XI.
GK: Gianluigi Buffon – Juventus
The veteran Italian may be getting on in years, but he is still a cut above the rest in between the sticks.
RB: Danilo – Porto
He may be on his way to Real Madrid this summer, but as it stands he has a case for being one of the finest players in Portugal.
CB: Sergio Ramos – Real Madrid
Danilo’s soon to be teammate, the Spanish skipper is one of the most formidable defenders in the world, let along southern Europe.
CB: Giorgio Chiellini – Juventus
Another Juve player, yes, but his no nonsense style would compliment that of Sergio Ramos, who would be more free to gallop forward in the way that has proved so successful over the years.
LB: Jordi Alba – Barcelona
Alba is a one-man left flank, and has no problems with tracking back or bombing forward.
