Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and his players will be desperate to put the 2013/14 season, in which they failed to lift a single trophy, behind them – with the Blues already having made a number of significant summer signings.
We’ve taken a look at the squad at Stamford Bridge ahead of the new season and ranked Mourinho’s current 26 players in order of their importance to the team.
26) Mark Schwarzer
With both Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois still at the club, experienced Australian ‘keeper Schwarzer is unlikely to get much of a chance to impress, even in the domestic cup competitions.
25) Oriol Romeu
The young defensive midfielder has been handed an extended contract on the back of his performances on loan at Valencia last season, but with a number of more senior central midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order it will be hard for the Spaniard to make much of an impression.
24) Ryan Bertrand
With Ashley Cole having left the club, Englishman Ryan Bertrand returns from a loan spell at Aston Villa as cover for Filipe Luis at left back – but Spaniard Cesar Azplicueta may even be moved out of position before Bertrand gets a game.
23) Christian Atsu
Signed from FC Porto, Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu is yet to make a first team appearance for the Blues – but his electric performance on loan at Vitesse Arnhem last season may have persuaded Mourinho that he is worth more of a look this time around.
