Fit again, the Ecuadorian international is likely to displace Matteo Darmian from the line-up with Van Gaal hinting that he will be his first choice right back.
DF: Phil Jones
Chris Smalling will likely have something to say about Jones having a spot in the starting XI in the new season, although there is still time for both to be left disappointed if a new signing is brought in.
DF: Daley Blind
Similarly to Jones, Blind will be filling in as United await the return of Marcos Rojo from international duty. The Dutchman remains a reliable presence.
DF: Luke Shaw
Shaw has looked much sharper and fitter in pre-season so far, and he will hope to continue that way in the lead up to the new campaign.
