3) Manchester United – Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind
The Red Devils are strong in defensive numbers – youngsters Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair represent decent back-up to the above quartet – but are short in quality and experience at the back.
Old Trafford-linked Sergio Ramos would have complemented this group perfectly, but has now signed a new contract at Real Madrid, and Louis van Gaal does not seem to have anyone else on his radar.
However, Smalling is showing signs that he can become United’s defensive leader. Blind has partnered the 25-year-old well in the opening games and it will be up to him, Rojo and Jones to act as support.
