French club’s director Leonardo in Rome to tie up deal.
PSG are reportedly edging towards an agreement over the signing of Napoli striker Edinson Cavani, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
It is understood that the French champions are willing to meet the €63m release clause fee, and as a result PSG director Leonardo is now in direct talks with Napoli to seal the deal.
Both Chelsea and Manchester City have shown firm interest in signing the player, but neither club have been willing to meet the asking price.
Leonardo is reportedly now in Rome for face-to-face talks with Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis, as they look to finally bring an end to the transfer saga surrounding Cavani.
The Uruguayan international is still in his homeland enjoying time with his family after the Confederations Cup, and isn’t expected back until next week at the earliest.
However, it is becoming clear that PSG have now emerged as the favourites to sign him and will likely wrap up a deal in the forthcoming days as talks continue.
What is clear is that Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be part of any deal, as his agent ruled out the possibility of him leaving the French capital.
It had been reported that the Swedish striker was unimpressed with the appointment of Laurent Blanc as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor, and may therefore be open to an exit.
However, that notion has been dismissed by his agent Mino Raiola, who instead insists that the Ligue 1 champions will pay the release clause fee to land Cavani, and now it is just a matter of time as Leonardo and De Laurentiis prepare to sit down and agree to a deal.
