Recent speculation surrounding Arsenal and the Dutch captain has been shut down before Arsenal could even lodge a bid.
Georginio Wijnaldum has said that he will not be leaving PSV Eindhoven this season, following recent speculation linking him with Arsenal.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the midfielder said, “At the end of last season I promised in a meeting with the coach and technical director, Marcel Brands, that I would stay,” he said following his side’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan.
The 22-year-old was given the captaincy at the start of this season following the retirement of Dutch legend Mark van Bommel, but Wijnaldum insists that it has nothing to do with his decision to stay:
“This has nothing to do with the fact that I’m now captain. The point is that I have given my word.
“Clubs being interested in me is a sign that I’m doing well, but I’m happy with PSV.”
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was thought to be interested in Wijnaldum following his failure to secure a central midfielder so far this season.
Newcastle confirmed earlier this week that the Gunners had made a bid for playmaker Yohan Cabaye, but swiftly rebuffed it. Wijnaldum was thought to be a target on a par with Cabaye, but it seems now that Arsenal will have to redouble their efforts towards the Frenchman.
