One of the most decorated college football players of all-time, Tebow was the first player in history to win the Heisman Trophy as a sophomore for the Florida Gators in 2007. That year Tebow recorded 32 passing TDs and 23 rushing TDs just one year after leading the Gators to a National Championship win over the Ohio State Buckeyes in a 41-14 victory. Over the course of the next few years he would finish in the top five of the Heisman Trophy voting twice (losing to Sam Bradford in 2008 and Mark Ingram in 2009) and led the Gators to a second National Championship win over Bradford and the Oklahoma Sooners in ’08.
After finishing college, Tebow was considered a difficult prospect to draft, but the Denver Broncos traded up for him in the 1st-round of the 2010 NFL draft. In 2011 he became the starting QB and led the Broncos to a division title, but despite his wins, Tebow struggled to perform consistently well on the field – but the media frenzy around him made it difficult for head coach John Fox to justify benching him. But when the Broncos signed future Hall of Fame QB Peyton Manning in 2012, the Broncos traded Tebow to the New York Jets for a late-round draft pick.
Despite the struggles of incumbent Jets QB Mark Sanchez in 2012, head coach Rex Ryan never gave Tebow a start at QB and made a variety of strange decisions regarding Tebow’s playing time – he only threw the ball 8 times all season as a gadget player. Towards the end of the ill-fated 2012 season in which the team would finish 6-10 and would go down in history as one of the worst in NFL history, Rex Ryan chose to start 3rd-string QB Greg McElroy (ironically the QB who beat Tebow in one of his final college games) in a game against the San Diego Chargers once Sanchez was benched. McElroy got injured the game and rather than turn to Tebow for the season finale against the Buffalo Bills, Ryan went back to Sanchez. Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum was fired after the season and new GM John Idzik decided to draft West Virginia QB Geno Smith in the 2nd round of the 2013 NFL draft – Tebow was cut less than 72 hours later.
Tebow had a brief stint with the New England Patriots in the 2013 preseason, but the Patriots cut Tebow before the regular season. Tebow was unable to catch on with any NFL teams over the next two years and was hired by ESPN as a college football analyst.
With the contract by the Eagles, Tebow would reunite with Mark Sanchez, who is expected to serve as the backup to newly-acquired QB Sam Bradford.
