Will Genia will start for Queensland this weekend.
Former Wallaby captain Will Genia confirmed Tuesday his return to the game after six months out with a knee injury, saying he would start for the Queensland Reds against Western Force at the weekend.
The halfback was hurt during Australia’s Rugby Championship win over the Springboks last September and underwent surgery to reconstruct his right knee.
It was a big blow for Genia who had assumed the Wallaby captaincy after skipper David Pocock was also sidelined by a knee injury.
The news of Genia’s return comes just a few days after Pocock was again sidelined with a torn ACL injury that could see him ruled out for the rest of the season.
Genia said he was returning a week earlier than planned but would only play the first half against the Force in their Super 15 clash in Brisbane on Saturday.
“Hopefully from then on I will be playing the full 80 (minutes),” he told reporters.
“I know I have done the hard work in getting my body right. It has actually been fortunate in a way because it has allowed me to have a full pre-season.
“I am refreshed after being out of the game for so long. I am happy about my fitness and my head space.”
