They are about to hire former Napoli head coach Rafa Benitez, and he has already expressed his excitement at taking on his new position.
“I am ready. I can’t wait to be there,” Benitez said to ESPN FC.
Napoli finished fifth in the Serie A standings after dropping their season finale, 4-2, to Lazio.
Real Madrid remains one of the perennial powerhouses of La Liga, but they experienced a somewhat disappointing season as they did not bring home any major trophies.
This was the main reason behind Ancelotti’s sacking, but they had won the Copa del Rey and Champions League trophies in Ancelotti’s first season.
Benitez was not able to lead Napoli to a Champions League title, but he was able to take them to the Coppa Italia title in the 2013-14 season while finishing third in the Champions League that season.
Benitez will look to add a Champions League stamp to his career after experiencing relative success at Napoli.
However, Ancelotti will not be easy to replace, even while inheriting a talented squad like Real Madrid.
