City tabled a £35m up-front bid for the 20-year-old last week, which was subsequently turned down by Liverpool who value the starlet at £50m.
According to The Sun, the cashed-up Premier League heavyweights are now willing to hand the Reds a £40m down payment for the England international with ‘significant’ future add-ons.
Sterling has two years left to run on his current £35k-a-week deal at Anfield, however it is believed he turned down a new and improved five-year £100k-a-week deal to remain with Liverpool.
Sterling’s agent, Aidy Ward, admitted the former Queens Park Rangers prodigy would not be signing a new deal in any circumstances meaning Liverpool will surely look to cash in on the player.
Manchester City are in desperate need to sign home-grown talent or risk having a Champions League squad of just 20 players next season.
