High praise indeed from former Real Madrid president…
Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has said the world-record purchase of Gareth Bale will help the La Liga club win the Champions League, BBC Sport reports.
The 24-year-old Welshman joined the Spanish giants for £85m from Premier League club Tottenham, after a drawn out transfer saga that went right down to the wire.
Calderon reckons Bale is unique, and his fantastic ability will give Real Madrid the edge in this year’s pursuit of the Champions League.
“Nowadays there is not another player in Europe or the world like him. He is strong, fast and scores a lot of goals,” said Calderon.
The attacker scored 26 goals in all competitions for Tottenham last year, turning from a highly rated player into one of the world’s elite. His powerful left-foot shot has become a trademark, and football fans all over Europe are drooling at the prospect of seeing Bale link up with Cristiano Ronaldo, the man whose crown as the world’s most expensive player Bale has stolen.
“He can help the team reach their aims of winning the Champions League, the Spanish League and any other titles,” continued Calderon.
The former Real Madrid supremo understands the £85m fee is astronomical, but thinks like the Ronaldo deal, it will eventually pay dividends.
“People said I was mad to pay £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo. But now everyone is happy. He has scored a lot of goals and helped us become much better. We have to wait for the results [to see if Bale is worth the money].”
