9. Daniel Sturridge – 7
Although maybe wasted opportunities that he had been putting away for fun at Anfield for the past 12 months, Sturridge netted well against Italy and was always looking to get into space and attack.
10. Wayne Rooney – 6
Came in for some flak from the British press, but silenced some of them when scoring against the Uruguayans and is still one of the best players in the squad.
11. Danny Welbeck – 5
A favourite of Hodgson’s, but did little to show why during his two appearances in which the Red Devils attacker looked lost and ineffectual.
18. Rickie Lambert – 5
The feel-good story of the squad turned out to be nothing but a sideline in the end, with one substitute appearance for the 32-year-old doing little to inspire.
19. Raheem Sterling – 7
All in all this was a positive first taste of international football for this young winger, who against the Italians looked dangerous whenever in possession and appeared to take most things in his stride.
