McDonald had multiple incidents of police being called to his house in response to 9-1-1 calls in 2014. McDonald was arrested but not charged with domestic violence against his fiancee and was named as the suspect in a San Jose sexual assault investigation in December 2014, which led to his contract termination from the San Francisco 49ers.
The Chicago Bears signed McDonald on March 24, 2015, though Bears owner George McCaskey expressed his initial doubts in an interview with the Bears official website about signing McDonald before new GM Ryan Pace convinced him.
ProFootballTalk reported back in April that the NFL cleared McDonald of potential Personal Conduct Policy violations arising from the first 2014 incident and would not suspend him under the new, harsher punishments for domestic violence that include a six-game suspension for first offenses and a lifetime ban from the NFL on second offenses.
