Cristiano Ronaldo equalled Lionel Messi’s single season Champions League scoring record as he notched the third in Real Madrid’s 3-0 quarter-final first leg victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Gareth Bale opened the scoring at the Bernabeu after just three minutes and another strike from Isco ensured Madrid had a comfortable 2-0 halftime lead.
Ronaldo’s history making goal, which also equalled the 14-goal mark set by Italo-Brazilian Jose Altafini for AC Milan in the 1962/63 European Cup, as well as Messi’s feat two years ago, came in the 57th minute and ensured the Germans, last season’s finalists, have a mountain to climb in next week’s second leg at the Westfalenstadion.
The result will have gone some way to making up for last season’s painful semi-final defeat to the Germans.
