The 24-year-old is one of Real’s top priority targets for the upcoming summer transfer window, with the Spanish giants desperate to land the in-form shot-stopper as a long-term replacement for the struggling Iker Casillas.
According to The Sun, United want to keep de Gea for at least one more season with a verbal agreement to allow him to join Real after that, similarly to how they handled Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Old Trafford in 2009.
De Gea is also keen to bide his time and wait until a starting spot is guaranteed in the Spanish capital, but it may be that Real will not be so patient and will consider moving for other transfer targets in that position this summer if they cannot lure away the Red Devils man.
