Blues boss Jose Mourinho had been planning on using television windfall money that the club will receive to fund a £100million move for the pair.
Bale is currently having a tough time in the Spanish capital, but would certainly add another dimension to Chelsea’s forward line, while Mourinho has made no bones about his desire to work with Varane again.
He hopes to partner Varane alongside emerging centre-back Kurt Zouma and believes that the pair can develop into one of the most effective and air-tight partnerships in world football.
However, Madrid president Florentino Perez has turned Mourinho away, vowing to keep hold of the star duo even if head coach Carlo Ancelotti moves on over the summer.
