The San Francisco 49ers and head coach Jim Harbaugh mutually parted ways after four seasons that consisted of two NFC West titles, three trips to the NFC Championship and a Super Bowl berth.
They are hunting for the new Michigan head coach’s replacement, and former Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is reportedly in the mix now.
Shanahan was fired by the Redskins after the 2013 season in a drama-filled season that consisted of a 3-13 record and quarterback Robert Griffin III experiencing a dropoff from his sensational rookie season.
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick notably struggled this season despite having an offensive guru in Harbaugh as his head coach, and Shanahan has been known for being a great offensive mind.
He led the Broncos to two Super Bowls and has shown a knack for getting the most out of his running backs, particularly Terrell Davis, who won a Super Bowl MVP after the Broncos won their second championship in 1999.
The 49ers will look to bounce back from a disappointing 8-8 season while making the right choice to fill the void left by Harbaugh.
