The 23-year-old completed a deadline day move to the Emirates Stadium for £16m, with Bruce admitting that by the time he registered an interest, his side were up against some big clubs around Europe.
With Arsenal and Hull meeting in the Premier League today, Bruce was full of praise for Welbeck, who played under him in a loan spell at Sunderland earlier in his career.
“I’ve got no doubt in my mind after working with him that he can play at any top four side, no question. He’s a top player,” said the Hull manager.
“We had a dabble. I rang his brother (and agent, Chris) but there were some rather big clubs in for him.
“I think Spurs were in there, Arsenal as well, and one or two from Europe as well. He had a pick of a few clubs.”
