New Toon director of football pulls plug on free transfer deal.
Joe Kinnear’s first masterstroke as Newcastle director of football has been to pull the plug on a deal to sign Dutch defender Douglas.
The Toon were reportedly close to signing the Brazilian-born centre-half, who is a free agent after leaving FC Twente.
But Kinnear has wasted little time in stamping his authority on the club’s transfer dealings following his controversial appointment as director of football on Tuesday.
Douglas’ representatives were due to fly to England on Thursday for talks but have been informed that the Magpies will not be pursuing a deal for the 25-ytear-old.
Sky Sportrs understands that Kinnear has already identified other defensive targets for the club to move for this summer.
Douglas, who is yet to win a cap for the Netherlands but has featured in national squads, has played over 200 matches for FC Twente and has also been linked with Liverpool.
